  • Install a current anti virus program, and keep it updated.
  • Keep Windows PCs updated with Microsoft security updates.
  • When choosing passwords, use mixture of capital letters, small letters and numbers.
  • If important passwords become known to others, change them..
  • Scan all downloads with your anti virus software before opening.

Avoid:

  • Clicking on links contained in emails, especially junk mail !
  • Clicking on/in Pop up windows.
  • Giving your email address to dubious websites.
  • responding to emails asking you to update bank, or other sensitive details. Banks seldom use this method.

Computer viruses

Keeping computer viruses out !

With computer viruses it's always best to prevent them entering your system. A suitable anti virus program is essential. Viruses mainly enter your computer in the following ways.

  • Disk - floppies and Cds
  • Email
  • Internet - malicious scripts
  • From other computers on a network, if applicable.

File sharing programs

Sharing and downloading music and videos.

In many cases these programs are viewed as illegal because they allow the free exchange of copyrighted music etc. These programs install spyware, which at best impinges on your privacy.

Avoid using pirated software

Pirated software can contain viruses, and may not function correctly.

In addition to the above you cannot install internet updates, some of which address critical security issues.
